Bringing Back My Reading Habit—One Page at a Time

ree

Now that my vision’s supported let’s talk books. I have been an avid reader since I was in second grade. My mother infused a love of reading when she read to me before bed, and then when I learned, I read to her. Such a good mommy.

On weekends during my middle school years, my mother brought me, my brother, and my cousins to The Stamford Library in Stamford, Connecticut. And we would spend time choosing our books for the next week or so.

I went from Nancy Drew’s Secret of the Old Clock to Lois Duncan’s Locked in Time to Christopher Pike’s The Last Vampire to Madeleine L'Engle’s Wrinkle in Time to Eric Jerome Dickey’s Liar’s Game to E. Lynn Harris’s Invisible Life to Sister Soujah’s Coldest Winter Ever to John Saul’s Unloved to Mary Higgins Clark’s Where Are The Children and beyond. Oh, we can’t forget about the Harlequin Romance novels I had no business reading.

Those were the days when I had plenty of time to sit back and read to my heart’s content. During summer breaks, that’s all I did. My tastes at that time were mysteries and horror. Now, my tastes have expanded.  I haven’t read horror in a while, but I still enjoy a good mystery and love psychological thrillers, sweet romance, and fantasy, and recently, I’ve been getting wooed by romantasy. And can’t forget the many personal development books, too!

I am bringing reading back into my life. My stack of digital books is piling up, and my audible app is bursting with all the books I have yet to hear. So, starting today, I am making time to read before bed, even if it’s five minutes. We’ll see how it goes, I’m nervous thinking I’ll stay up late because I want to finish one more chapter, and then three hours later I’m still reading.

What are you reading?
